The Central Bank of Egypt announced this provisional figure on September 7. In July, reserves were reported at $56.2939 billion, marking an increase of approximately $920.6 million, or 1.6%. This milestone signifies the first time Egypt’s official reserve holdings have surpassed the $57 billion mark.

The August figure continues a consistent upward trend observed throughout 2026. Reserves started the year at $52.5938 billion in January, rising steadily to $52.7455 billion in February and $52.8306 billion in March. The upward movement persisted, reaching $53.0092 billion in April and $53.1342 billion in May. The mid-year period experienced a sharper growth rate. Reserves climbed from $53.1342 billion in May to $55.0723 billion in June, then further to $56.2939 billion in July before hitting the August peak. These three consecutive months contributed an addition of over $4 billion to the overall reserve total. When compared with August 2025, the current figure is approximately $7.96 billion higher, representing an annual growth rate of around 16.2%.
Remittance inflows bolster foreign currency reserves
Remittances from Egyptians working abroad set a new high during the 2025/2026 fiscal year, with the Central Bank of Egypt reporting total inflows of about $47.3 billion. This compares to roughly $36.5 billion in the previous fiscal year, reflecting an increase of 29.6%. In June alone, remittances reached about $4.2 billion, a 15.6% rise from the approximately $3.6 billion recorded in June 2025.
Egypt’s latest balance of payments figures cover the first nine months of the fiscal year 2025/2026. During July to March, the overall balance showed a deficit of $1.8 billion, while net inflows into the capital and financial account totaled $9.9 billion. Meanwhile, the current account recorded a deficit of $14.6 billion. These figures offer the most recent official snapshot of Egypt’s external financial position prior to the August reserve update.
Monthly reserve records continue their upward trajectory in 2026
Throughout 2026, the reserve figures have reached successive historic highs. Holdings exceeded $55 billion in June, surpassed $56 billion in July, and in August, the reserve level crossed the $57 billion threshold for the first time. Egypt has now reported three consecutive month-end reserve totals above $55 billion. The August reserve level is also more than 10% higher than the $51.4516 billion recorded at the end of December 2025.
These latest data point to Egypt’s net international reserves being at their highest official level ever documented. They also indicate a continuous monthly increase since the start of 2026. From January through August, each month’s reserve figure was higher than the previous one. Although the August reserve figure remains provisional according to the central bank’s reporting standards, it clearly reflects an upward trend in Egypt’s reserve stock throughout the first eight months of the year.
