The law provides a narrow exception for qualifying generators that connect through standard household outlets. Confirmation that each plug meets the relevant BS 1363 standards must come from a notified body. This safety amendment applies to England, Wales, and Scotland, while product approval requirements extend across the entire UK market.
The interim standard establishes criteria for electrical design, mounting, fire safety, labelling, and consumer instructions. It also addresses safe disconnection, limits on electricity exported into household circuits, and safety during operation. A technical study evaluated typical systems under controlled domestic wiring conditions, confirming their safe operation without prolonged unsafe energisation. Variations in product quality, export controls, and electromagnetic compatibility were also identified and helped shape the final specifications.
Consultation Feedback Influences Market Launch
In total, 466 responses were received during the public consultation process on plug-in solar systems. Over 85% of participants supported the interim standard, with most also in favor of the plug-in amendment. Respondents included installers, manufacturers, network operators, technical experts, and members of the public. Concerns were raised about older wiring and products sold without proper approval, while others called for clearer guidance to prevent confusion between plug-in solar panels and plug-in battery systems, which are not covered under the current framework.
Preparations for retail deployment are progressing ahead of the August launch, with major retailers engaged in discussions regarding compliant products. The new rules are designed for small systems suitable for balconies, gardens, and other outdoor spaces, but they do not apply to plug-in batteries or devices that store electricity imported from household circuits. Systems using the new connection method will not be legally operable until after August 27. Once the date has passed, only products within the 800-watt limit and approved for connection through a standard household socket will be permitted to operate.
